Evangelize Through a Messianic Passover

One of the Messiah's last earthly acts was to celebrate the Passover. Gathering His disciples in a small room in Jerusalem, He led them in a Seder. Seder means to tell the story, a story that is full of prophecies about the coming Messiah. The Passover stands in sharp contrast to Easter, the holiday traditionally celebrated by the church.

Easter started as a holiday to the goddess Ishtar, and even though Christians celebrate the resurrection on Easter, it still keeps much of its pagan trappings, like Easter eggs and the Easter bunny.

I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. - Isaiah 42:8

Prepairing the Seder Plate

While I am not judging those who celebrate traditional holidays with pagan origins, my family has found it very refreshing to replace Easter with a Passover Seder. Our family will invite friends and neighbors to our Passover Seder; as such, this is a great evangelistic tool. We partake in simple fellowship around His Word, while meditating on the great things Jesus has done.

And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
- Luke 22:19-20

While Easter keeps many of the pagan traditions, not so with Passover. Its origin was commanded by God, and its traditions were practiced by Jesus. In fact, it was during the Passover Seder that Jesus said, ''this do in remembrance of me''. Did He want us to celebrate a Passover in remembrance of Him?

One can only wonder at how the Jews can have celebrated the Passover for thousands of years without seeing that Jesus is their messiah. Perhaps a Messianic Seder could help you witness to Jewish, as well as to Gentile friends.

The Seder Plate

And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, - Ephesians 3:9-10
